Just a few weeks after his stop in Pointe-Claire to talk about The Illegal and delight us with so much more, novelist Lawrence Hill ends today as the winner of this year’s Canada Reads literary contest.
I just know that everyone who was there to hear him speak that night at City Hall, and to talk to him, is thrilled but not surprised.
Hill’s novel The Book of Negroes also took the Canada Reads prize in 2009.
This year’s Canada Reads theme was “starting over” and featured “books about transformation and second chances, stories of migrants, immigrants and others who are choosing – or forced – to make major changes in their lives.”
Everything about The Illegal makes it one of the most timely novels in recent memory.
Congratulations to Lawrence Hill and to all of the Canada Reads finalists.
